SUMMARY

Dog Key was once a narrow sandbar in the Mississippi Sound, measuring nearly a quarter mile across during the early twentieth century. The island briefly supported a casino resort, a hotel, and an artesian well before storms reclaimed the land beneath the Gulf. Today, only the well pipe remains. Though the sand bar now rests approximately five feet below the surface, fresh water continues to flow from the pipe without interruption. Local fishermen have long considered the water safe to drink. The Archive does not.

LOCAL LEGEND

Long before the island carried the name Dog Key, the Biloxi people spoke of a place they called The Sleeping Sand. According to oral tradition, the sand bar was not permanent land but a place that "remembered" being above the water. It appeared only when it wished to be seen. One story tells of a young hunter who crossed the sand bar with his loyal dog during a violent storm. The hunter never returned. The dog did. The animal refused to leave the shore despite repeated attempts by the tribe to bring it home. Each morning, the dog was found once again on the sand, facing the Gulf as though waiting for someone to emerge from the water. The elders came to believe the dog had accepted a sacred duty. From that day forward, no one was permitted to force the dog from the sand. To do so was believed to invite another soul into the water.

OBSERVED PHENOMENA

Since 1876, at least fourteen documented attempts have been made to rescue a solitary dog found wandering Dog Key or the end of Ship Island, or Horn Island. When the dog is successfully rescued from the island, the animal has been:

Adopted by local families.
Transported to the mainland by boat.
Taken to veterinary clinics.
Housed in animal shelters.
Relocated over one hundred miles inland.

Every case ends identically. Within a month, the dog disappears. The following morning, fishermen report seeing a dog standing on Dog Key. No evidence exists showing how it returns.
